1. Start with the right rack size
Rack Your Garage installs standard 4′ × 8′ overhead garage storage racks. A full-size rack gives you 32 square feet of elevated storage while keeping the footprint predictable when planning around garage doors, lights, attic access, and vehicles.
For many garages, one rack works well above the front of a parked vehicle or along an open section of ceiling. Larger garages may have room for two, three, or more racks.
2. Ceiling height affects the best setup
Our racks have an adjustable drop of approximately 23–43 inches from the ceiling. The ideal drop depends on your ceiling height, the height of your vehicles, the garage-door track, and what you plan to store.
You do not need to know your exact ceiling height before requesting an installation. If you know it, it helps with planning. If not, we can confirm the setup during the installation process.
3. Placement matters
A good rack location should maximize storage without interfering with everyday garage use. Common areas include above the hood of a vehicle, above the rear of a vehicle, or in other open ceiling areas.
Before installation, look for potential conflicts such as garage-door tracks and openers, ceiling-mounted lights, attic doors, HVAC equipment, tall vehicles, and doors that swing into the storage area.
The goal is not simply to fit a rack somewhere. The goal is to create useful storage while preserving safe clearance underneath it.
4. The rack needs to be secured to the structure
Overhead racks should be anchored into appropriate structural framing, not simply attached to drywall. Proper installation requires locating the ceiling framing, laying out the rack correctly, and fastening the mounting points securely.
This is one of the biggest reasons homeowners choose professional installation. A rack hanging above a vehicle or walking area is not a place to guess about framing or fasteners.
5. Know the weight capacity
Our standard 4′ × 8′ rack is rated for up to 600 pounds when properly installed and used as intended. That does not mean every item in the garage belongs overhead. Dense, unusually heavy, hazardous, or frequently used items may be better stored elsewhere.
Overhead racks are especially useful for bulky but manageable items such as plastic totes, holiday decorations, camping equipment, luggage, and seasonal household items.
6. Think about access before loading the rack
Items stored overhead should be things you are comfortable accessing with an appropriate ladder or step stool. Put the least-used items farther back and keep items you access more often near the front edge.
Labeling storage totes also makes a big difference. Once several similar bins are overhead, labels save you from pulling down multiple containers just to find one item.
7. Consider hooks for additional storage
